Announcing The First Golden Key Hunt Winner

A Heartfelt Ending to an Unforgettable Adventure: Announcing the First Golden Key Hunt Winner

What an incredible journey this has been.

The very first Golden Key Hunt is officially complete, and I want to take a moment to share the full story for everyone who wasn’t able to attend the Closing Celebration, but still poured their heart into this adventure. This wasn’t just a scavenger hunt. It became something deeper. Something families shared. Something people felt. Something Warrenville embraced.

And that’s exactly why we did it.

Where the Golden Key Was Hidden

Let’s clear this up right away: the Golden Key was hidden on public land, and the nearby Public Works Building is a city building, not a private business, so the entire area was open for exploration.

The key itself rested just north of Harding Field. If you walked the grassy path past the benches and let yourself wander toward the opening where the retention pond appears, you were steps away. A quiet clearing waited just beyond that point, calm, tucked back, almost poetic, and hanging peacefully from a tree in that clearing was the Golden Key.

Some hunters later realized they had stood so close without knowing it, and honestly… that’s part of the magic.

Meet the Family Behind the Golden Key Moment

The Golden Key was found by Dan Mesch and his wonderful family, who have called Warrenville home since 2006.

Dan and his 13-year-old son Sam, a student at Hubble Middle School, searched the final area side by side. They spotted something hanging from a tree together, but it was Sam who connected the final clues and brought the moment into focus. That spark in his eyes when he recognized the Golden Key… that’s the memory that will stay with them forever.

With them on this adventure were Dan’s wife Candace, who was registered in the hunt, their daughters Cora (10) and Winnie (8) from Bower Elementary, and their loyal dog Cap, the heart behind their local landscaping business, Capco.

When they won the $2,000 prize, they shared something that touched all of us, they’ll now be able to afford Christmas presents for their kids and take care of some bills during the holidays. But even more meaningful was what they said next:

They would’ve done the hunt all over again, even without the prize. Because it brought them together. Because it got them outside. Because it gave them time as a family that they’ll never forget.

And that’s what this entire journey was meant to be.

The Closing Celebration

The Closing Celebration brought out a mix of joy, surprise, and that warm feeling you get when a community comes together. The biggest gasp of the night came when everyone learned the Golden Key had been hidden only 500 feet from where we were sitting at the Warrenville VFW.

After the winner was announced and the check was presented, the big group of hunters walked to the exact location together. We stood under the same trees, in the same clearing, and took a group photo that perfectly captured the spirit of the entire adventure.

It felt like the whole town exhaled in unison, happy, connected, and “mostly” fulfilled.

We also were proud to give a donation to the Waldorf School of Dupage, whose approach to education finds similarities to the aspects of the hunt.

Looking Ahead: The Next Golden Key Hunt – April 1, 2026

The Golden Key Hunt will return on April 1st, 2026, and we can’t wait to do this again.

The next hiding spot will be chosen based on sponsor partnerships in the coming months, and we’re excited to expand into nearby communities like Naperville, St. Charles, Oswego, and Yorkville. We also plan to introduce a second key for those who may want a slightly simpler, but just as meaningful, journey.

You can sign up now to secure your Golden Key Ticket for the 2026 Hunt. Early sign-ups may get a special perk.
